Active inference (free-energy principle)
Learning & Inference MechanismsA variational framework where perception and action both minimize expected free energy, unifying curiosity and goal-seeking.
Friston's active inference framework: an agent maintains a generative model of the world and acts to minimize expected free energy, which decomposes into epistemic value (expected information gain — curiosity) and pragmatic value (expected reward / goal proximity). Unlike ICM or WorldLLM, curiosity emerges from the variational objective rather than being a separately engineered signal. Active inference is the mechanism underlying the active-inference-agent system.
